I finally decided it is time to try and enter some art shows and events this year.

My first submission in a number of years, and I am pleased to say that one of my 3 submissions got accepted.

Designing with the color of the year
By now we all are aware that the color for 2010 is Pantone’s Turquoise. This is what Pantone has to say about the color turquoise:

“an inviting, luminous hue, as the color of the year for 2010. Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of well being.”

Turquoise certainly evokes the ocean and sandy white beaches when you look at it or think about it as a color. In it’s full unadulterated format it is a strong clean contemporary color and begs for crisp whites to surround it. Metallic silver would a perfect addition to the palette along with a chocolate brown, or a subdued gray or even sharp black. In a loft or modern condo setting this combination would be perfect. It would work in tropical climes naturally, however for our softer climate I believe we need to tone it down.

I worked with Deb Seeley of

Deb Seeley Designs, LLC a number of years ago where she had shades and tones of this years color working through out a beach home. My contribution was to create a high gloss, glass like surface with turquoise and metallic colors layered across and over each other. The result : stunning with suggested texture with a nice reflective sheen. These tones are more subdued than pantone’s pick and the walls are successful because of that.

There were two walls opposite each other with the same finish and if they had been that bright and undiluted color, the overall feel would have had a more contemporary look as opposed to the quiet sophistication that these walls evoke. They echo the sea just the other side of the windows and invite you in.

I believe you can incorporate this color into your designs this year and make the results long lived by using the color sparingly. Introduce tones and shades of turquoise in your fabrics, accessories and of course your art.

My art, shown here, was accepted into the Beaverton Visual Arts Showcase plays on this current trend, yet will be around long after the 2010 color has moved on.

What is a Gicleè, aka Digital Reproduction?

Every one has heard me talking about Gicleè digital reproduction and my incorporating it into my business model. The question that is most frequently asked of me is: What is A Gicleè?

Gicleè : the name comes from a French printmaker's term for "fine spray", and was adapted to distinguish the technique from ordinary offset printing. In this printing method, the media (ink) is carried by a spinning roller while infinitely small pixels of rich, vibrant water-based, archival inks are sprayed on it at a very high speed, onto fine archival art paper or canvas (or linen), known as the ‘substrate’. This renders an amazingly smooth and consistent image true to the original painting, a superb quality fine art reproduction. This Gicleé (g-clay) fine art print, is a state-of-the-art reproduction and refers to a machine-made reproduction using the latest and most sophisticated ink-jet technology. A Gicleè is produced by taking high quality digital images in the form of scans of the original art work. The digital image is adjusted to the closest possible color match to the original. If you have a printer who knows what they are doing you should not be able to distinguish the difference between the original and the reproduction.

This color matched image is then printed on to the surface of your choice: artist canvas, archival watercolor paper, self stick fabric, brushed cotton. Depending on where you have the print created, you can event print onto acrylic panels, silk, wallpaper and other thicker surfaces.

How durable is a Gicleé Print?

The latest inks offer up to 70 years light-fastness and UV-resistance under museum archival conditions. Gicleé is quickly becoming the new standard in the art industry, and is widely embraced for its astonishing quality by major museums, galleries, publishers and artists. The ability to ‘print-on-demand’ is the driving force behind the ‘digital reproduction’ movement.

A Gicleé print is quite simply the closest replication of an original artwork that is currently possible. For the artist, and the client this means more fine art at obtainable price points. I work with a local company (Oregon Photo ) and work closely with them on all color proofing. In my opinion their Technician, Kirk, is one of the finest in town. All of my reproductions are signed, hand embellished and numbered where applicable.

Thinking outside the art box

Traditionally when considering art for your clients or for your personal use you think original art is priced outside of your budget. Not True! Original art is affordable and there are excellent print on demand options too.
Usually we define art as a one dimensional piece to hang on the wall in some manner. What if I told you, you could transfer art you love to just about any surface you choose? You can do this with digital reproduction technology and bring art work to everyone affordably. I have been working hard to bring this aspect into my business model. I have discovered that you can print onto most materials now from glass, tile, fabrics to wood and plexiglass.The concept of digitally manipulating art to suit you is very exciting, because you can take the whole art work and make it any size you want, as long as you have a good enough and big enough scan of the pieces. The piece shown can be made into a wall sized Wallstallation (TM), a wallpaper mural or a different shape.

First I created a scan of my original mixed media art "Thunder".
By manipulting the scan on the computer, I will work with you to slice and dice the work and come up with any number of new artworks for the client. I will ensure you get professional product and stunning results.

By using the computer to digitally create a new composition for the art, I can introduce interesting options for you and your clients.

Out of the box art suggestions:

Space Dividers: Need to separate a space in a loft? Use my art as your starting point and we can create a custom silk or other sheer fabric panel. Now hang multiple panels for versatile, modular room and space dividers.
Need to Recyle? Have an old beat up water stained door? Attach a panel of Kathryn's art work to it. Or have a digital version printed onto self stick vinyl and apply it to the grungy door – you have thought outside the box.
Printed Tile: Create emphasis and impact with custom printed tiles. We have the ability to print onto glass tile, porcelain and tumbled marble. You can make a mural, or simply create some focal tiles.
Stair Risers: Need a totally wonderful look? Hand create stair risers, hand painted or Gicleè printed onto wood or tiles. Design can be made to look like Mexican or Moroccan tiles, inlaid wood patterns and more. I can design and oversee the work to make thre risers look like inlaid wood.

Ancient art

In my process of cleaning out my studio and reducing clutter by more than 50%, one of my projects was to clear out my precious drawings, sketches and paintings. These have traveled around with me for the past 15 years because they make great reference material.

They did take up space though, and were packed away in an old picture carton and stashed behind other layers of 'stuff'. So the theory was good. The practicality not so much as they have not seen the light of day for about ... 15 years!

Before putting the studio back to together, 50% had to go. This carton was one of them.

I went through the carton piece by piece and took a digital image of each image. It was a wonderful journey and reminded me of why I draw and paint.

Here are two art pieces I did in high school! What a pack rat Admittedly I only kept these two pieces but it shows that I am a hoarder.

This painting was done with acrylics (I think we called them poster paints back then). The theme set was for "The World is a Merry Go Round"! It took me forever and I was very proud of it. I am glad I am past this phase in my art!

This drawing we had to study a cabbage! Cut it up draw bits of it and put it together in a good composition. I again took a long time over it, but it is quite fun and abstract. So it started.

Oregon Dream Home Completed

Well, we finally completed our massive project with the Oregon Dream Home project I wrote about in February. Our team worked well and the results were fantastic. The 'reveal' will be aired in May sometime. I will be sure to post a link.

This is my 'modular' mural I did for the living room. It is the focal point of the room and visible when you walk in the front door. Pretty awesome.

The home owners were hoping for a 'beach' scene and were very happy with my 'window".

I used stencils from Royal Design Studios for the window tile.

I also landed up doing a second large mural of a peacock which we did in the studio on roclan cloth and then wall paper pasted it into place. It takes up the whole wall outside the bathroom, so everytime the family goes for a shower they get to see this view.
The stencils for this mural were provided by Jeff Raum.

Stuck for a backsplash solution?

I created this great customized mural for the back splash behind the cook top. It contains personalized tidbits for the client. The request for a bright, color saturated scene invoking French Country. It certainly makes a grand statement when visitors walk in the room.
I also have the capability now of creating custom TILE murals for back splashes, bathroom installations and more. I will be posting information on this great option soon.
